 "Impressive performance!" 2009-09-30
By Djeibou
Although I have owned Magnepans, Carver Amazing Loudspeakers, Monsoon planars, and Infinity EMIT speakers, among others, these speakers are something special at their price point! Even though they are not the equal of the aforementioned speakers, they come amazingly close for a fraction of the price. Considering that I live in a tiny apartment and have fewer discretionary dollars presently, these Mordaunt Short speakers fill the bill quite nicely! They sound great straight out of the box, as well. I can only imagine how fabulous they will sound after a break in period. At the price which I paid, ($249)they are quite literally a STEAL! I would recommend stands that are about 30-36 inches high as the speakers are deep, but not very tall. They produce an astounding amount of tight, controlled bass from a remarkably small enclosure. MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!!

"Pricey but well worth it" 2009-10-16
By Yoda (Hadera, Israel)
These speakers are relatively pricey for their small size (about 2.5 pounds each and about 5 inches tall) but are powerfull (125 watts) and, hence, can output quite a bit of sound. More importantly, they produce a very wide range of sounds at very high quality. From low drone to high pitch the sound is great.

In addition to their small size they also come with wall brackets that permit easy mounting. Plus, underneath, they have a standard screw mount (like most decent cameras)that permits them to be mounted on to very flexible ball based wall mounts such as the OmniMount 10.0 Black Wall or Ceiling Mount (Ea) Stainless Steel Speaker Mount. This particular mount is highly recommended for this pair of speakers as it permits perfect flexibility not only with respect to wall mounting but in permitting the user to set a very wide range of directions for their speakers.

Due to their small dimensions, weight and high quality sound output, they are ideal for use as wall mounted speakers, especially front high left/right speakers (their ability to accurately reproduce both low and high drones and pitches make them especially useful in this role).

 "Excellent Sound" 2008-08-28
By C. Grimaldi (Brooklyn, NY USA)
Great Sounding speakers for such a small size. I recently went from a 5.1 to a 7.1 system and added these speakers as the rear channels. I am now thinking about replacing my Polk box front speakers with them as well. The reason I didn't give this product a 5 star review was because I have a mixed polk speaker system and do not have these speakers in front and back so I might not get the full effect. In any case I am happy with the purchase and crutchfield was great with the delivery.

"Remarkable compact speakers - open, clear room-filling sound" 2008-12-23
By snapcrackle (United States)
If you're looking for compact, attractive speakers that sound great, it's hard to do better than the Mirage OS3. (The OS3 series are the third generation of Mirage's well known Omnisat speaker.) They are very clear and open, without any of the boxiness or dull sound that conventional compact speakers often have.

The OS3s are an especially good choice if you're looking for speakers for a room that isn't a dedicated home theater with the recommended layout. That is, if you have an irregular room, multiple seating areas, or a room you use for more than just watching movies and listening to music, the OS3s do an amazing job of filling the room with nice sound. Many conventional speakers are directional, so they only sound best at one "sweet spot" in the room. Omnidirectional speakers such as these, on the other hand, spread sound into a large area (or in technical terms, they have very wide dispersion). That's part of how these little speakers fill the room with sound.

You can use these in any speaker position (front, left, , surrounds), or combine them with the matching Mirage OS3-FS floor-standing speakers and Mirage OS3-CC Center channel speaker in any combination.

With 8 ohms impedance, they are compatible with any receiver/amplifier. The 89db sensitivity means they will be easy to drive - they don't need an excessive amount of power to produce sound. But with power handling of up to 150 watts, they can produce a lot of sound.

The changes from the V2 version are mostly cosmetic - Mirage knew they could sell a lot more of these if they offered a gloss black or white finish. There are a few small technical changes as well - ribbed surrounds, and some other small changes in the drivers. (The floorstanding versions have a few more changes.)

A couple things to note in thinking about whether they are right for you:

- The OS3s are very small for the sound they produce, but they aren't tiny speakers at 5-1/4"W x 8-1/4"H x 6-1/8"D. Look at the dimensions, and find something about that size at home to give you an idea of how they'll fit in. (Mirage does make the smaller Mirage Nanosat Prestige satellite and Mirage MX satellite speakers. While they're nice, they don't quite have the performance the OS3s have. But they are very popular due to their size.)

- Alternatively, if you have space, use these just as satellites and get the FS (floorstanding) and speaker that perfectly match these.

- If you have a room with lots of very hard surfaces (all glass and walls, not much drapery and carpets) there may be a lot of sound reflections in the high end from these omnidirectional speakers, so they may sound "bright" or a bit harsh in your room. Getting them placed right (away from walls and windows) might help reduce that, but they still might not be the best choice in such a room.

- Despite their amazing ability to fill a room, as with all speakers placement relative to where you're listening from is essential to getting the best sound. You need to be able to look into the speaker from where you're sitting for it to sound best.

There are quite a few audio magazine reviews of Mirage speakers if you Google on Mirage Omnisat review. Also, there is more info and high resolution photos at the Mirage speakers website.

 "Bose 201-V" 2009-05-15
By Jack R. Schodlbauer Jr. (Tallahassee)
For the price these are some of the finest bookshelf speakers you can buy. You can very well spend a lot more and still get a comparable sound. This is a cost effective purchase that will last you for years too come.

 "Nice pair of speakers" 2009-02-14
By Diamond57 (New York)
Bought a pair of these to replace an old 1980's pair of inexpensive Radio Shack speakers. Work just fine in the 16 x 20 room I placed them in. At the 50watts/channel I supply them with, (I rarely pass volume setting 2 on a 1-10 scale), they have more than sufficient bass and enough treble to satisfy my easy listening preferences and sound like speakers 2x their size. They are solid, well made, attractive speakers and they come with a 5 year warranty from Bose which I doubt I'll ever need.

 "Unbelievable sound" 2008-09-08
By Wadood Chaudhary (New Jersey ,USA)
I'm shocked at the negative reviews. All thes Bose bashers will make you end up wasting your money on sub-standard products which may do well on some esoteric audiophile test but fail miserably in your living room. I did. After loosing $300, I have learned to believe my ears and bought Bose 201-V as a two front speakers after hearing them out at a local store - even though I was told otherwise by many on AVS forums. This one is not only beautiful to look at but sounds better than anything I had listened to in my 43 years on ths planet.

 "Excellent" 2007-10-24
By Charles J. Budde (Saint Louis, MO USA)
The Bose 201's sound wonderful in my large living room space. I listen to classical, opera, jazz and rock. The also provide very nice audio for television. They are compact, classy and have a great sound. I think they are just great.

 "Nice bookshelf speakers" 2005-10-26
By Sambit (Texas, USA)
I was just reading the reviews people are giving on 201 speakers but after listing to many good speakers in the same price range I found that either others are giving too much bass or too much treble. This speaker is giving a balanced out put of both bass and treble. Off course there are much better speakers than this but the price is also high. I do not recommend to use this as a part of home theater surround speakers (compared to Bose cube speakers) but can be used an additional front speakers to get better sound while playing songs. So in all, these are very good speakers for stereo sound. If possible look for open-items in the shop, they will be cheaper but performance will be same or buy online to save tax. If you get it for $150 or less then they worth money.

The world's best loved bookshelf speaker / Now redesigned, with even better performance / For music or home theater

Amazon.com Product Description

The trim, stylish 201-V speakers from Bose are ideal for your den, dorm room, office, or small-scale living room. Their sleek design makes them welcome in any décor. Sold in pairs, the 201-Vs work well with either your stereo components or your home theater, elegantly handling either front- or rear-channel surround sound (use 2 pairs for both).

You'll enjoy lifelike, spacious stereo sound from these compact yet versatile bookshelf speakers. In a concert hall, listeners hear a mix of direct and reflected sound arriving from different directions and at different times. Bose's proprietary Direct/Reflecting speaker technology uses the walls and flat surfaces of your room to more closely approximate the sound in a concert hall. From cutting-edge DVDs to your vintage records, you'll enjoy larger-than-life spaciousness in nearly all you listen to, thanks in part to Bose's precisely angled, 2.5-inch proprietary Stereo Targeting tweeters.

The speakers' broad-dispersion Stereo Everywhere design lets you enjoy full stereo sound throughout the listening area, no matter where you sit or stand. Instead of concentrating the stereo effects into a single "sweet spot," the 201 bookshelf speakers are engineered to deliver realistic performance almost anywhere in the room.

The speakers each use a single 6.5-inch woofer and a flared-slot port--a specially engineered design wherein woofer and port geometry complement each other to reduce air turbulence. The ports ensure clean, deep bass, particularly when you're listening at high volumes.

What's in the Box
Two speakers, self-adhesive rubber feet, a user's manual, and warranty/registration information.

 "Great" 2010-01-06
By John C. Callicutt (Fort Worth Texas)
I'm not exactly a critic but I auditioned several speakers at best buy when I looked at these. I particularly looked at some Polkaudio's that were $20 dollars less...they, in my opinion, were not in the same league as the Bose 201's. The bass in them is reasonable for the size of the speaker.

 "not good" 2009-12-13
By N. Mashmoor
well, I've got those for free since the person who gave them to me had my old Paradigm monitors and let them get wet in the basement... make long story short. I love music, and music sounds better with good speakers! when I watch a movie those Bose are not too bad but I have them hooked up to an Onkyo receiver with a 12" Paradigm sub and they sound bad! what a shame. my first and LAST Bose speakers. who ever tell you on those reviews that those speakers are good, doesn't know what he/she is talking about and had never listen to a good set.

the mids are flat, the highs are pitchy and there is no bass and even with a good sub, they just rewin the music. I listen to a lot of classical and operas and the mids are very important but all that is happening is losing the good vocals. I have enough bass thanks to the sub but those Bose...comon, give me a break... buy a low end no name speakers and get more sound. one more thing: you need a lot of power to push them, much more then good speakers do.

 "Disappointed really" 2008-04-24
By Ravi (Dallas, TX)
I was THIS close to ordering the 201's online, but I'm glad better sense prevailed and I went down to the local Circuit City with a few CD's of my own for a little "test-drive".

I am not a serious audiophile, and having been fed on media propaganda, I thought Bose were the ultimate. I guess I was wrong. Even to MY untrained ears, it was quite obvious that the Bose didn't sound half as good as they're cracked out to be.

Now, they're not completely worthless, of course, but hearing them side by side with similarly sized (and lower priced) speakers from Polk Audio, Boston Acoustics and Infinity, one could tell that they were a bit out of place.

Sure, they can get loud, really loud, but if loudness is all you want, I'll have my neighbours pay you a visit.. ;-). Compared to other good speakers, the Bose lacked the richness and fullness of sound. You couldnt "feel" the music. The sound was "weak", and at higher volumes, just felt out of place (think Rick Moranis jumping up and down, thumping his chest trying to scare someone.. kinda funny though), and after a while "annoying" (think Rick Moranis jumping.... get the picture?). I also tried the 161's... same result. The sound was clear and crisp, with no distortions, but just not "satisfying".

With the same CD's I also tried Polk Audio RM101, and Boston Acoustics Micro120X, half the size (and price) of the Bose 201's, and even the store associate was surprised by the difference in sound quality (before we started testing, he couldn't talk about anything but Bose.. just like me.. :P).

I finally decided upon the BA Micro120X, probably one of the "ugliest" speakers you can find... lol, but with a GREAT sound. Plus it has a great deal going on at BUY dot COM, where a PAIR (usually it is sold in eaches) is avaiable at ridiculously low prices [Can not state actual price since that is against Amazon's review policy and will get edited out, but think 85% lower than MSRP, not gonna last at those prices for very long though. So if you're looking for one, hurry.]

To be fair to Bose, if I had not heard any of the other speakers, and straight away purchased Bose, I would have been very happy with my purchase and would probably have rated them 4-stars (like I said earlier, they are NOT absolutely worthless). But when you compare them to other good speakers, they just fade away, and the fact that they are so much more costly than other better speakers makes me think they deserve no better rating than a 1-star. Probably a bit harsh, but then, so was the difference in sound quality and listening experience.

"sounds better than all-in-one-solution such as ipod hi-fi" 2007-09-08
By Gedget Enthusiast
this speaker, when combined with my sony AV receiver and my ipod as main music player, brings out the musics/songs alive and it certainly sounds much better than ipod hi-fi hype....the best part is the price! ipod hi-fi costs $350, but this bose 201 speaker costs approx. $200 and my sony AV receiver cost me $200 thus total $400 spent for much better sound! This speaker is very affordable and it will certainly beat other speakers @ it's price range!! If you look for magnet-rumbling sound quality, I'd suggest you look for yamaha's since my mom have them in my living room which certainly is bigger speaker than my bose hence better sound quality....*and hence much bigger price*

"overpriced, cheap build, poor sound" 2007-03-07
By A. Fabbri (seattle, wa USA)
We just moved into our first house, and in the last couple of months, I've purchased three brands of bookshelf speakers. In order, I've purchased a pair of Infinity Primus 150 speakers, a pair of small ($10 each on super sale) Pioneer S-HF21-LR speakers, and now I just opened a pair of Bose 201's I got with my credit card points.

The first thing I noticed about the bose 201-V speakers was the build quality: almost as good as the $10 pioneers (the pioneers don't have exposed particle board, the bose speakers do). There are no post-style connectors, just the cheap hole-and-lever type. The Infinity 150's are built out of much better materials, have gold post-and screw style contacts, removable fronts, solid wood construction, internal dampening, nice feet, and wall mounting slots.

The Bose 201-V's sound decent for their size, but they certainly don't sound as good as the Infinity 150s, which are almost half the price! Specifically, I notice certain mid-range tones are exaggerated with the bose 201's. It is almost as if the cabinets have some resonance frequency that sets off with a certain midtone. The bass response also seems a little uneven, with certain bass drum notes showing up loudly, but other (higher) bass guitar notes almost absent. The absence of certain bass notes is probably what bothers me the most. I'm running a straight amp without any EQ.

I got these speakers with my credit card points, and I'm thinking of selling them on ebay and buying something else.

Check out stereophile for more speaker information.. they had a good article on the Infiniti Primus speakers.

The gold standard in stereo audio reproduction / Now redesigned, with even better performance / For music or home theater

Amazon.com Product Description

The 301-V series speakers employ the renowned Bose magic, in the form of Direct/Reflecting speaker technology. These versatile bookshelf speakers bring a lifelike spaciousness to movies and music. The combination of direct and reflective sound mimic a live performance, whether it's cinema or concert.

The speakers stand alone, mightily, but they also work well with a channel speaker (the Bose VCS-10) to recreate a true cinema experience. Stereo targeting tweeters, a rear-firing tweeter, spatial dispersion lens and an 8" woofer fill a room with sound without filling it with cabinetry.

Automatic protection circuitry prevents drivers from being overdriven and provides increased reliability.

For its class, the 301 Direct/Reflecting system sounds much bigger than its price suggests.

 "buy them" 2009-12-31
By lilnasty (Cypress, Tx)
although I did not purchase these from amazon.....these are by far the best sounding book shelve speakers I have ever bought...hence the name Bose.

 "Good speakers" 2009-02-03
By Southern Yankee
These speakers don't seem to have quite the space in the sound my old 301s had, but they still provide a very realistic sound. They seem to be a little heavy on the bass response for me, I would like a little more emphasis on the treble as I listen to classical music. They are still very good speakers, though, and the instruments are all clearly and individually defined. Make sure you get them up off he floor, though. On the floor the sound is muddy.

 "26 Years & Stll Kickin'" 2008-11-05
By Joseph Brown (St. Louis, MO.)
Mine are not the Bose 301-V's pictured here. Mine are the original Bose 301's bought roughly 26 years ago & still kickin'. I bought one pair at first to back up a pair of larger Pioneer speakers when pushing a large hall on a DJ gig. I would stretch out wires long enough to reach the back of the hall. Finally, getting a bit too old to play DJ any longer, I sold the Pioneers & bought another pair of Bose 301's for that "surround sound" effect. Compare these to other bookshelf speakers in the same price range. I believe you'll decide on BOSE also. To say my Bose 301's have stood the test of time would be a gross understatement.

 "Awesome" 2008-09-05
By Master of all Trades (Cambridge, MA, United States)
These are the best speakers I have ever heard and I have tried a lot. You will be blown away. They are much better than Bose 201 so worth spending extra bucks. I have hooked them to an onkyo receiver as the front channel speakers. I also tried Bose channel VCS10 but it's crappy.

 "It's like being there!!!" 2008-09-04
By K. Houghton (Wisconsin)
I never thought I would own a pair of Bose speakers because they were too expensive but these were the perfect price. It's a whole new experience in sound. They don't sound like conventional speakers do. They give the music depth and realism. Live concerts are like being there, in the first row. Sound comes from all around your room. I have a 5.1 surround system and this adds quality and professionalism to any system. I am enjoying my stereo more so than ever. Being a sound engineer I know the difference between studio sound and live music. With these speakers I couldn't tell the difference.

I highly recommend these speakers for people who take their music seriously. If you have alot of money, try the 901's and let me know what you think.

"Stop Bose Bashing! 301 Speakers are phenomenal!" 2009-10-03
By J. S. Robb (Dale City, Virginia)
A few years ago, my wonderful wife, (she truly is!) bought me a pair of BOSE 301 speakers in cherry from Crutchfield. Her hope was that I would stop using the very large Optimus Pro 4000 speakers I've had for years. First off, speakers and headphones, and in fact all electronics some would say, need to be broken in by many hours of use. I've been into high-end audio for 35 years now, so I've learned a thing or two.

The BOSE 301 speakers are the best they have ever made. Better than the 901s. They need to be positioned correctly so that the "Direct-Reflecting" drivers can do their thing.

In our case, I have them mounted on wall-mounted TV stands that have them adjacent to the large solid-wood TV cabinet. They are just over 8" from the wall, about

5" from the side of the cabinet and about 40" from the side walls. The front tweeters are aimed exactly at the seat to watch the TV. (Note the cabinet, which almost reaches the ceiling is exactly ed on the wall.)

This is not the main stereo. The living room has the 250 WPC separates stereo and is NOT set up symmetrically like the family room is. So, the 301s just wouldn't do.

However, where they are, they sound FANTASTIC! LPs especially sound great. Today I played an old QUAD LP of the 1812 Overture and chose Dolby Pro Logic for it. It

blew me away! After that I played a surround SACD and was even more impressed. 301s rock!

All-in-all, the sound stage the 301s put out, even in stereo, is wide and deep. It extends well beyond the physical width of the speakers location. So, to truly enjoy YOUR 301s try my set up. I found two brand new conventional TV wall mount stands on eBay that seem tailor-made for the 301s.

In closing, they must be set up symmetrically so that the sound can truly bounce off the walls and ceiling. Then you sit front and , crank it up and try NOT

to smile!

"Best speakers for the money.. Period" 2009-03-17

I Thought I was doing good with a set of Infinity speakers. I always liked Bose products from listening to them in the stores where they have sound rooms setup. I took a chance and bought a set of these and it was amazing. After plugging these in and putting on a cd, it was like you could almost see the music coming out of the speakers !! The highs were very crisp and you can hear every detail of the music that somehow gets lost in other speakers. I was so impressed that I immediately trashed my infinitys ( I actually gave them away )( I couldnt stand to listen to them anymore ). Buy a set of these and you will be telling the same story to someone else !! I dont think you have to be an audiophile to know what kind of sound you like hearing !!!

"This is a review of the previous series 4 speakers" 2009-01-21
By NCshopper (NC)
After reading reviews on the series 5 speakers, I had to put in my two cents on the previous series 4 speakers that I own. I bought mine 9 yrs ago. First of all, these speakers sound awesome! I have considered buying a subwoofer a few times and then thought, why? These have such impressive bass for an 8" subwoofer speaker that there is no reason to buy a seperate sub. I have been using these speakers for the last 9 yrs with my home theater system and watching any action movie is an incredible experience. I have never turned the volume on my receiver past 5 and I only have a 70 watt per channel receiver. I bought a Pioneer receiver when I first bought these speakers and the setup sounded awful. I returned it and bought a Yamaha and the difference was beyond words. I use the digital optical audio port as that gives the best possible sound. Anyone who has a negative review might simply not have enough clean wattage to drive these great speakers. I also use the VCS10 channel speaker and the rear speakers are the previous version of the 161's. I can't remember which model they are. Everything I have read about the series 5 says they are even better than the series 4. I have no intentions of replacing any of these speakers until they die and when they do I will buy the newest versions with no hesitation. Give them a try and I know you will not be disappointed.

"The 5.1 System Bose Should be Making" 2008-12-30
By Damien Stratton (Potomac, MD)
Bose is marketing their products wrong and I can see why so many people don't like them. The Lifestyle and Acoustimass systems are overpriced and don't do the job. Solution: Front L/R speakers = Bose 301. Center = Bose VCS-10. Surround L/R = Bose cube speakers (come with Lifestyle and Acoustimass systems, but if you call Bose tech support, you can order then separately... or eBay). Subwoofer = Polk Audio PSW110 with the crossover set at around 90hz. Sorry Bose, your subs are no good. Amplifier = Yamaha HTR-5940 (read the manual and set it up right!). This is what Bose should be selling. It sounds AMAZING!

These are the best speakers I have ever heard and I have tried a lot. You will be blown away. They are much better than Bose 201 so worth spending extra bucks. I have hooked them to an onkyo receiver as the front channel speakers. I also tried Bose channel VCS10 but it's crappy.

A versatile pair of compact, high quality speakers / Ideal for rear channel, second room or main speakers in small rooms

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy rich, full sound from music or movies with this compact pair of sleek Bose speakers. Whether placed on a desk or bookshelf or mounted on a wall for use as surround speakers, these speakers are designed to deliver balanced, spacious sound with minimal or moderate amplifier power (10 to 100 watts per channel). Automatic protection circuitry keeps the speaker drivers from being overdriven, heightening the speakers' reliability without interfering with your listening.

If you'll be using them in a home-theater capacity, keep in mind that they're designed to blend seamlessly with the Bose VCS-10 -channel speaker and any Direct/Reflecting Bose speaker system.

Unlike conventional speakers, which radiate sound in a single direction, these speakers use Articulated Array driver positioning and Stereo Everywhere technology to deliver balanced sound throughout your listening area. Further, Bose's two 2.5-inch proprietary Twiddler drivers per speaker move more air from their small enclosures than similarly sized conventional drivers, creating a sound you'd expect from much larger speakers.

Be sure to use the proper gauge (or thickness) of wire or speaker cable for the length required to run the distance between your amplifier and your speakers. If the length is 30 feet, use a minimum of 18 gauge (.75 mm); use 16 gauge (1.5 mm) for 45 feet or 14 gauge (2 mm) for 70 feet. Supplied custom mounting brackets offer a range of placement options.

What's in the Box
Two speakers, self-adhesive rubber feet (three per speaker) for shelf positioning, wall-mounting brackets, and owner's manual.

"Bose- Poor products driven by advertising hype" 2004-02-03
By
Bose is a fascinating case study of what the power of advertising can do for products that are acknowledged within the audio industry as being cheaply made and technically outperformed by all of its competiters. Based on audio theories from the 1960's and parts of lower quality than what can be bought at Radio Shack, Bose has built an incredible empire out of poorly designed products driven by a huge advertising budget creating an aura of "Bose".

Consumers should do their research before shelling out money for Bose speakers. A google search will bring you to epinions or audioreview websites where you can find review after review, mostly negative, from buyers of Bose products.

The commonly accepted wisdom in the audio industry is that Bose makes low audio quality products and sells them at very high prices. In other words those Polk, JBL, Wharfedale or Infinity mid-fi products you can find at Amazon are usually higher quality at much better price points.

Compare the sound if you ever get a chance. Make sure you DO NOT depend on volume, in other words volume is a bad indicater of quality. Listen for the high and low notes and to the clarity of the music. Tough to do in a showroom at Circuit City or Best Buy, but even there the differences will show up. Bose attempts to prevent consumers from doing this by segregating their products away from the competition.

After this you might look at online audio magazines (do a google search), Audioreview (one word) and Audiogon. You'll find whole NEW world of audio products such as PSB, Paradigm, Vandersteen, Quad, Sonus Faber, ACI and many more who's products will put you on a much higher level of audio than you'd ever imagine. Usually these speakers are SEVERAL times more electronically sophisticated than Bose at the same price! What you won't find in these websites of magazines are Bose articles. Bose just isn't taken seriously by the industry.

Good luck and happy hunting!

"Wonderfully transparent sound, reasonable price" 2003-05-28
By J. E. Gillaspy (San Antonio, TX)
We bought several pairs of these 161 speakers when they were first introduced a little over a year ago. We use one pair for the surround speakers in our theater system, and a pair in each of the other rooms of our home.

Although we are longtime Bose fans, we decided to audition these in an audio store as we had been disappointed in a Bose channel speaker we had purchased previously, (based on reputation, we didn't listen first!). We were favorbly impressed in the store and have been very pleased with them in our home. Regardless of room decor, the speakers produce clean, stereo sound. (Its possible to identify orchestral instruments and their location!)

These speakers are very linear above 80-90Hz, to the audible limits. They drop off rapidly below about 80Hz. Bass frequencies are adequately reproduced for orchestral music but will need to be augmented for heavy bass or special cinematic effects. (sub-woofer)

These speakers are intended to be wall mounted and are easily installed with the included brackets. They do not sit well on a shelf!

A versatile pair of compact, high quality speakers / Ideal for rear channel, second room or main speakers in small rooms

Amazon.com Product Description

A versatile choice for both listening to music and appreciating the sonic splendor of big-budget blockbusters, the Bose 161 multipurpose speaker system offers topnotch sound in an elegant package. Unlike conventional speakers, which radiate sound in a single direction, these speakers use Bose's Articulated Array and Stereo Everywhere technologies to project sound throughout the entire room, so listeners in the corner can appreciate the same subtleties as those in the middle. In addition, the proprietary Twiddler drivers (two 2.5-inch drivers in each enclosure) make the speakers sound much larger than they actually are. The end result is a consistently impressive sound field that simulates the cinema experience. Meanwhile, the speakers' actual size--they measure 11 inches wide by 4.12 inches tall--belies their big sound, so you can store them easily in compact locations, such as small dorm rooms or crowded offices. They even come with mounting brackets for installing on a wall or ceiling. The speakers' sleek black housing also blends into practically any décor.

Additional features include magnetic shielding, which protects your TV from video interference, and automatic overdrive protection. The speakers are computer tested for quality and reliability and carry a five-year warranty from Bose.

What's in the Box Left speaker, right speaker, mounting brackets, self-adhesive rubber feet, user's manual.

"Sound quality is great, but demands strong bass boost" 2009-12-03
By Jose Luiz (Brazil)
I was a bit disappointed with the low bass level. I have to boost low frequencies about 8 dB to get them to the proper level. After that I had to adjust the whole equalizer range (by ear) to get a balanced sound. A chart with frequency response would help a lot but I was not able to find it. Anyway, it sounds great, clear.

"Great for backgroud mood music in the home" 2009-09-26
By James M. Koury (Winchester, MA United States)
I am convinced that the reviewers calling these "cheap" or "tinny" sounding have never listened to them.

If you want unabtrusive speakers to provide clean and spacious background music with a decent base response these are perfect (Eagles, Carley Simon, Joni Mitchel, Miles Davis etc.) If you want speakers to play at volumes you need to shout over and rattle the fillings out of your teeth (Zep, AC/DC, Sabbath), look elsewhere.

These are perfect if mostly used for providing background mood music in rooms when entertaining, such as for the holidays. We have 2 pair we have been using for 5 years in a 23'x16' LR and 28'x14' kitchen and they still sound like new. We are adding a third pair in the dining room and a 4th on the porch.

Well made wall mounts as well.

 "Very good for surround" 2009-07-13
By Arthur Case (Phoenix, AZ)
The Bose 161s do a very good job as surround speakers for (in my case) a typical sized family room. I've used them for several weeks now as side surround speakers. In my setup all of the bass is directed to the two large front speakers and the subwoofer, so the 161s just need to provide clear neutral sounding support - which they do very well.

My order was fulfilled by JR Music (through Amazon) and the speakers were shipped and arrived in a few days with no delays.

These are odd shaped speakers with compound curves. I have my speakers laying on their sides (bookshelf style) and the Bose provided rubber feet to stabilize the speakers were missing from the package. Without the feet, the speakers rock from side to side. I called Bose customer service, and they very quickly and politely handled my call, and sent the rubber feet, express mail at no charge.

"Bose 161 are just surround speakers NO MORE" 2009-06-08
By Marco Aviles Benitez (Quito, Ecuador - SouthAmerica)
I've read some critisism for the Bose 161 speakers at the moment when the reviewers are saying they can't have enought bass sound, and the same I'm reading for those that are writting about the "cheapper" components for Bose brand with its expensive prices.

Let's start. The Bose 161 are just surround speakers, that is the fact and don't search or try to find any kind of deeper bass frequency expecting a BOOM inside them, these little boxes have inside two 2 1/2" tweeters and so in that way it makes a very firm and strong mid frequency.

To me, Bose are one of the State-of-Art brands who are specialized in speakers for mids and high frequencies with a very reliable wide of clear, shiny and high fidelity sounds, but I must accept Bose haven't a very reliable subwoofer's line 'cause I've heard most of those subs and it can't reach the best in deep and power for bass sounds, there are just the perfect company for the small boxes of tweeters and mids but no for truly bass power, neither for home theater experiences specially for that action movies with tons of explotions everywhere.

Back for 161 speakers, I bought them for replacing in my home theater system my old front Technics towers that were more specialized in mids and mid-bass sounds, in the moment of proof the 161 I was totally amazed. For first time I've heard the perfect complement for my other speakers (I have two MK rear surrounds, one Boston Acoustics for and a 12" Sony sub that shakes the room with very deep and powerful bass as I ever expect), in my Technics amp I could make the proof for movies and music and I'm very happy to say, the 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS sounds never sounded better than ever, and for music I proved with the Esquivel CD "Latin-Esque" (that comes with a large variety of stereo and cuadraphonic changes) and I'm absolutely pleased with the 161 Bose boxes, now I can enjoy incredible high fidelity sound in home without innecesary high volume and any kind of noise, just the necessary to hear the absolute one.

Then, is this technology that can make the Bose 161 sounds in that way "cheap"? Of course no!!! Are many people expecting to find in the Bose line some speakers who came with gold, diamonds and very finest bringing from the Amazon jungle wood boxes? Or is necessary buying more expensive sound systems? I've heard Harman Kardon, JBL, Jamo, Infinity, Polk Audio and more speaker brands and Bose is in the same quality level, including MK and Boston Acoustics that are my other speaker brands.

So if you want quality for the correct price, just go for it but, If you are expecting better sound and high fidelity technology for a cheapest price belief me, I can't recommend nothing. Just try with the Bose 161 and you'll find high fidelity sounds in the mid-high frequencies, no more.

 "Nice small speakers" 2009-05-21
By S. Presant (Chadds Ford, PA)
We use these in a professioanl training environment, matched to an 80 watt HK amp. They are the main speakers. They are clean, but not loud enough for our large training room full of people. These would be well served as rear speaking in a 5.1 system or in small rooms where loud volumes are not needed.

The speakers were a bit smaller than I expected. The included brackets were easy to use and are plenty stable.

Overall I am pleased with the quality of the sound of these speakers.

 "Great garage speakers" 2010-01-07
By D. Ward
I got these speakers along with the Sony 7000s for the house. I use these speakers in the garage(2 pairs of them) with a Sony STR/DE-185 head unit to make noise while I work on my cars/trucks. Good sound quality but no low bass. Can't expect much from these small units, but good quality for what they are. The wife complains cause she can hear them in the house. Maybe they are better than I thought....

"Great upgrade over USB speakers!" 2010-01-03
By Tom Fred (Atlanta, GA USA)
I had been listening to my music through a set of logitech USB speakers for years, and had forgotten how much more there is to hear, even in a low-grade MP3 file. I'm using these speakers with a simple Pioneer receiver, connected via an optical cable to an Airport Express using AirTunes. They sound good, especially given the $50 price. I plan to supplement with a small powered subwoofer and channel speaker as the budget allows. Can't beat this setup for a small guest room/office setup on a budget.

"OK Performance but inadequate My Needs." 2010-01-02
By Ambrose A. Nnaemeka (Detroit, MI USA)
These speakers are ok if you intend to use them for your mini systems but definitely not enough as a surround for a major home theater setup. They do not produce noticeable distortion at moderate volume though. I purchased them thinking they would be good matches for my Sony SSF-7000 Floor Speakers Sony SSF-7000 Floor-Standing 4-way Speaker with 8" Woofer (Pair) but I was wrong. They sounded tiny and different despite employing different permutations of auto and manual adjustments using my Sony STRDG820 Sony STRDG820 7.1 Audio Video Receiver - Black. I ditched my Bose Surround Speakers for these and I now wish I had listened to the Sony in the stores. Depending on your setup they may be adequate for your needs especially if space is an issue for you.

 "Speakers" 2009-12-30
By Peter Walter
I was looking for an additional pair of compact speakers for my home stereo system and those Sony speakers fit the bill just perfectly. I just recently bought a Sony audio receiver to expand into a four speaker system. They have great sound clarity and are a good value for the money.

 "Good Speakers" 2009-12-25
By KevinsWorld (KalyFornia!)
Not much to really say other than the speakers are great and replaced some older Infinity one where the cones had eventually given out after a long service life. Hopefully these will last just as long.
